Back in '98...

Back in '98, when I was 4...
'Cricket' was, watching one 5'4" man on the wavering screen of my black n white Weston TV..
A 'bat' for me was always an 'MRF one'..the one that the man in that no. 10 jersey played with..
'Pride' was hitting a six to be called 'Sachin'..

Probably, every right handed kid in India, with a bat in his hands was once a 'Sachin'...I too was...back then.

back then in 98, I did'nt know for how many years that 5'4" was there on that wavering screen..
Back then, I didn't know that MRF was just a company that manufactured tyres...
Back then, I did'nt know much...

But today, when I'm 19, when I know all these round the world stuffs, when the meanings of terms have changed for me...when a colored screen with a digitalised connection has replaced that black n white one,
when Adidas has replaced that MRF...
when I and many more contemporary right hand bats are kids no more...

I still see that 5'4" guy gear up and play with the same zeal and flare out there...and then suddenly
"Sachin anounces retirement"

today, I know all those stuffs, the adidas ones, the MRF ones...questions; answers; whatever, things yet to come, things that I today, remain completely alien to...Cricket without that 5'4" jersey no. 10...
that 'Pride' without a 'sachin' tag...
for sure, MRF will remain MRF, that is not going to change, most probably...But,something or the other will certainly change after that 200th test...

Farewell master!

'Cricket' for that '98 kid will still be that 5'4" man on doordarshan live, till he dies...
